Steven (“Coogie”) J. Coogan, age 68, of Cottage Grove, WI passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at UW Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Coogie was born on December 1, 1957, the son of Raymond and Nancy (Biddick) Coogan. He graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1976. On May 30, 1981, he was united in marriage to Mary Jo Walsh at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Mineral Point, WI. For more than 30 years, Coogie was employed and proudly served CMS properties as Maintenance Manager.
Coogie was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Cottage Grove. He was a proud member of the Cottage Grove Lions Club where he served side by side with these long-standing friends. He was especially honored to receive the “Knight of Sight” award for his work with eye donation transport. He would be fulfilled to know his own eye tissue was donated for research in eye disorders.
Twenty five years ago, a fall from a tree stand while hunting left him paralyzed – Doctor’s said he wouldn’t survive. He spent months in the hospital recovering and learning how to navigate his new life using a wheelchair. He faced multiple challenges with not only the support of family, but extraordinary friends who stood beside him every step of the way. He showed faith, perseverance and fortitude through continuing to work, raise his family, and attend his kids’ sporting events – he never missed one. Everyone who met him was inspired by his resilience, quiet strength and unwavering positivity. Coogie made everyone, young and old, feel so very important, valued and special. He was especially close to Trevor and Carlina and always had the right advice to give. Mary Jo was his warrior and he was hers. His “peachy” Georgia and little Luca lit up his life in a special way no one else could. He was an incredible role model of courage, strength and patience to their impressionable little minds.
Coogie’s pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his remarkable wife, Mary Jo; his children, Trevor (Hayley) Coogan of Sun Prairie and Carlina (Timothy) LaFond of Monona, and his adored grandchildren Georgia and Luca Coogan of Sun Prairie. Along with his bonus son, Shawn Murphy of Mineral Point.
Coogie is further survived by his devoted brothers, Mickey (Therese), Dennis (Linda), David (Joan) and Tim (Penny) and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeff (Kathie) Walsh, Jim (Lynn) Walsh, Julie (Jerry) Cassidy, Jill (Gary) McGuire and Jay (Cory) Walsh, along with his many admiring nieces and nephews.
Coogie was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond, Nancy (Biddick) and Joseph Kammerud, his brother, Jerry, his in-laws, Gerald and Jeannine Walsh, his nephew, Troy Coogan and niece, Kalea Walsh.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at UW Hospital and Clinics, along with Commonheart Home Health, for their exceptional and compassionate care over the years.
