Wally was born in Chicago, IL to Ruth Niemeyer Roder and Theodore Roder. After his father’s death, Ruth married Clifford Tollefson, and Wally grew up on the Tollefson family farm. He graduated from Mt. Horeb High School in 1953. After that, he served in the U.S. Army. When he returned hom, he met Geraldine (Geri) Shipley, and they lived in Mt. Horeb and had six children: Anita, Michael, Barbara, Susan, Scott and Christine. Later, he married Nancy (Hughes) Weiss in 1977 and became a stepfather to Jay and Jon Weiss.
Wally worked for Aring Equipment for over 30 years eventually becoming a service manager and traveling the Midwest. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and playing jokes. He was also a real fix it man and could repair anything. After his retirement, Wally and Nancy moved to Crandon, WI where they continued to enjoy the outdoors and serve their community. They were active members of Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Crandon.
Wally is survived by his children Anita (Kevin) Novak, Michael Roder, Susan Roder, Scott (Stephanie) Roder and Christine Roder Coyle, stepsons Jay Weiss (Kris Schaefer-Weiss), Jon Weiss (Ellen Ranney), fifteen grandchildren,m fifteen great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. He is further survived by his siblings Carol (Dennis) Breese, Bonita Guarino, Steve Tollefson, Cathy Jacobson, and many nieces and nephews.
Wally is preceded in death by his wife Nancy Roder, mother, Ruth Tollefson, father Theodore Roder, step-father Clifford Tollefson, brother Kenneth Tollefson, sister and brother-in-law Georgia and Mike Standford and his daughter Barbara Roder.
A celebration of Wally’s life will be held September 5th at the Poynette VFW from 2:00-5:00 p.m. He will be buried in a private service earlier that day in West Bend.
