The draft era was a different time

by J. Patrick Reilly

I served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, when the draft was a reality for young American men. It was a time when duty wasn’t always a choice—it was an obligation. Today, looking back with decades of perspective, it’s clear that bringing back the draft would be a mistake.

The biggest reason is simple: today’s military is built differently. After Vietnam, the United States transitioned to an all-volunteer force. That change created a military made up of individuals who choose to serve, not those compelled by law. Motivation matters. A volunteer soldier is more likely to be committed, disciplined, and prepared for the complexities of modern warfare. Today’s military requires highly trained, specialized personnel—cyber experts, drone operators, intelligence analysts—not just large numbers of troops.

A draft also raises serious fairness concerns. During Vietnam, not everyone bore the burden equally. College deferments, medical exemptions, and other loopholes meant that some avoided service while others had no choice. Reintroducing a draft risks reopening those same inequalities, where working-class Americans shoulder more of the sacrifice.

There’s also the issue of public trust. The Vietnam-era draft contributed to deep divisions across the country. It fueled protests, resentment, and a loss of confidence in government leadership. Forcing citizens into service today could once again create social unrest at a time when national unity is already fragile.

Finally, we have to consider the human cost. Compelling someone to serve in a dangerous environment without their full willingness can affect morale, mental health, and long-term well-being. Service should be an act of commitment, not coercion.

That doesn’t mean service isn’t important—it is. But instead of a draft, we should focus on encouraging voluntary service, expanding opportunities, and supporting those who choose to wear the uniform.

The draft was a product of its time. Today, we should leave it there.
