Pointer VB takes Gold title at Sprawl, sweeps New Glarus Tuesday
Mineral Point’s volleyball team went through the tough SPRAWL preseason tournament with enough power to win the Gold Bracket.
Coach Kari Kabat gave the following wrap up.
“We went 4-1 in pool play and 6-1 overall on the tournament. We beat Cumberland 2-0, Westby 2-0, Sparta 2-0, and Bangor 2-0. We lost a tight three game set to Stratford in the third set 17-19, dropping us into the B Bracket (Gold, as the top bracket is Platinum). Then in bracket play we beat Richland Center 2-0, and Green Bay Preble 2-0 to win the Gold Bracket.
“We had a lot to figure out going into the Onalaska SPRAWL as we have a lot of positions to fill with losing our large senior class last season. The girls played well through several lineups and helped us establish a more consistent lineup and positions going forward.
“This tournament is a lot of really great competitive teams and a lot of play to kick off the season. We are excited about how our season is shaping up and look forward to continuing to grow our young squad’s skill set. Sadie and Sophie Miller really impressed us and the twins will share the setting position going forward.”
The Pointers had a non-conference match up with New Glarus Tuesday and swept the Glarner Knights 3-0.
Scores were 25-17, 25-22, 25-22

“We were a little shaky in some moments tonight and played a bit like we were playing n a roller coaster at times,” Kabat said. “I am proud of our girls for fighting through the ups and downs and still being able to get a home game opener win. We are still working on some consistency in our setting so our hitters know what to expect.”
“I thought Ava and Maddy played well on defense,” Kabat said. “They cover a lot of ground and cover our hitters well.”
“Maddy and Brynn did some nice things offensively, and Kinlee Prust gave us a big presence in the middle attack,” Kabat said. “The first day of school games are always a little shaky due to new routines and nerves, but I am happy with our overall performance tonight.”
