Pointers sweep Fennimore, silver champs at Aquinas tourney

Two ranked teams.

Three exciting matches.

Still a sweep for the Mineral Point volleyball squad Thursday over Fennimore. After the match-up the Pointers are ranked seventh in Division 3 and Fennimore fell out of the rankings to honorable mention.

Scores were 30-28, 25-21 and 25-18.

“We had a good night against a solid team.” commented Pointer coach Kari Kabat.  “Fennimore has been having a great season.  We just had more offensive weapons than they did without Nelson-Hahn. We also played solid defense and our serve receive was really good.”

Kabat had some comments about individual performances.

“Maddy Kabat and Brynn  Swenson executed well on the outside, even with them keying on them early with the block. Our middles Kinlee Prust and Tenleigh Bockhop did a nice job of getting around the double block and made smart shots when necessary. Ava  Ingwell was very good defensively and read their hitters and got into good defensive position to make a play. It was an all around solid performance and great team win to keep us at the top of the SWAL”

Silver Bracket Champions

Following is what coach Kabat said about the tourney.

“The Aquinas tournament is a nice tournament with opportunities to see some different teams than we normally see in our area.  However, this year, we played Sparta a second time, as we played them in the Onalaska tournament and they won in two.  They are a much stronger team than when we played them in August.  We played well against them, but we just couldn't match their energy. They were very close matches.”

“We also unfortunately had to play Mondovi twice due to how the seeding worked out. We would have liked to have seen a different team in bracket play, but that is just how it works out sometimes.  Then, we had to play Fennimore again for the second time this week for the championship in the Silver bracket. So, we did see a local team again, but again, just how things worked out.”

“Sparta was the only team we lost to on the day.  They are a Division 1 team, and they made it to the Gold Championship, but fell to Stanley-Boyd. Overall, we played pretty well, but we have some work to do on our game intensity and keeping a steady energy throughout matches. This was our last tournament for the year, so we can now turn our focus to post season play and prepping for what we still need to clean up before then. We also have two strong conference matches left that we need to be on our A game for.”
