Along The Ad Routes

It’s officially ended - The Quality Bakery that is! Last Saturday was the final hurrah for the Crubaugh family and its 97 years of service to the area, and I mean area. On the final days a lot of people came from far to get their final taste of the products that people have talked about for years. Many would take fresh donuts to their place of employment into Madison and beyond! I even had Mike try to personally deliver some to Atlanta, Georgia on one of his bike trips! My mother used to have me get an assortment of Danish every week and she would freeze them and thaw one out daily! The list of stories could go on forever, as we wish the Quality Bakery could! It was only fitting that Courtney’s nieces Maddy, Leah, Cloe and her daughter Josie manned the front counter for the final rush on Saturday! We filmed their final rush from the back room to the front counter. Check out The Dodgeville Chronicle FACEBOOK page soon to see it all!

Saturday morning breakfast took us to the east a little to Blue Mounds to Hooterville Inn. Actually our plans were to go to The Golden Eagle in Barneveld, but when we arrived there the place was dark! So we went five miles further east to Blue Mounds. I learned later (via FACEBOOK) that The Golden Eagle was closed for breakfast Saturday and Sunday due to two staff members getting married! Anyway, Sarah was or waitress at Hooterville. They don’t serve omelettes, so I had a skillet (very good). We had two orders of biscuits and gravy (very large) and one order of cinnamon French Toast (again very good). We were shorthanded since Potsie had his garage sale, Tom headed to his cabin in the Dells and Dave had his sons in town for the weekend. So, it as Bob,Terry, Royce and me making the trip. Bob had to be back to take part in Highland’s Homecoming Parade and 150 year celebration!

While we were eating at Hooterville a gentleman came up to us and said, “This must be the Dodgeville bunch!” He takes the Chronicle and reads about us weekly! Bob asked his name an he said, “Mike Hasburgh.” Bob asked if he was from Highland and he said that’s where he was born and raised. It turned out to be near where Bob’s farm was. Mike now lives in Mount Horeb. He is a cousin of my high school English teacher - Sally Hasburgh! I told him that he had a good first name!

It seems like the Fall Sports Season has just begun and already it’s winding down. We’re in the 2nd half of the volleyball conferences, leaving regionals, sectionals and finally state November 6-8. Football has just two games left before playoffs begin and end at state November 20-21. Cross country has the first state tournament on November 1. The teams are winding down with conference meets October 16, followed by Sectional action then state.

Next weekend is Dodgeville’s Homecoming celebration. The kids had fun all week long in school with dress-up days and visits from the football team. The football game highlights the week of sporting events on Friday night against Platteville with the dance and King/Queen carbonation on Saturday night. Homecomings are always a fun time for the schools!

I keep saying that last Sunday was the final week for “FallBall”. I think this last Sunday was it this time1 Dodgeville played a 9-inning game against Cross Plains in the near 90 degree heat. I can’t believe the temperatures for this time of year! But it’s supposed to cool down into the low 60s, but them go back up some into the mid 60s by mid week! We might hit 70 again in the next few days, but the 80s are probably history for his year!

Today is a popular day for people of all (of) ages. Thursday, October 9 is “International Beer & Pizza Day”, something celebrated all over the world! It reminds everyone to take a moment to indulge in this delightful combo, and remember the good things in life! Grab some friends and head over to a tasty pizza place and get ready to have some fun! Some places even have specialty beers that they specifically recommend to pair with pizza. Experts suggest that veggie pizzas might be more happily paired with pale ales or Pilsners, while a meatier pizza could be better enjoyed with something darker like a stout or a porter.

I’m all for the pizza part!  The beer part I let go of nearly 50 years ago!
