Joan Lynn Gorgen, age 84, of Mineral Point, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Upland Hills Nursing & Rehab Center.
Joni was born on December 7, 1940, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Reuben and Dora (Johnson) Thiede. She graduated from Rufus King High School in 1958 and attended nursing school in Milwaukee, where she met Gregory Gorgen. Joni and Greg were married on May 5, 1962, at St. John’s Cathedral in Milwaukee. They later moved to Mineral Point, where Greg worked alongside his father at the Gorgen Funeral Home.
Joni was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, raising four children. She actively volunteered for the local boy and girl scout troops, and with the Memorial Hospital of Iowa County Women’s Auxiliary. She was a member of the Mineral Point Women’s Club and the Red Hat Society. She had a strong faith in Jesus and the Holy Spirit, teaching religious education at St. Mary’s Church. Joni was also involved with Aglow International and Faith Lutheran Church in Mineral Point. Together with her mother, Dora, she owned and operated the Town and Country shop in downtown Mineral Point for several years.
She enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, was a master gardener, interior designer, and loved traveling. For 20 years, she and Greg spent their winters as snowbirds at The Villages in Florida and her favorite spot, Anna Maria Island.
Joni is survived by her children: Grant (Ann) Gorgen, Mike (Jenny) Gorgen, Steve (Denise) Gorgen, and Beth Larsen; her grandchildren: Lexie (Joel) Whitehurst, Tyra, Grady, Gunnar, Matthew (Tayah), Joshua, Ryan, Joey (Taylor Politoski), Jake (Carley Hach), Jaynie, Kiagh (Mason Horn) Van Etten and Kendall Van Etten; her great-grandchildren Abigail and Myles Gorgen; her brother, Richard (Diane) Thiede; her nieces Dawn Thiede and Rebecca (Joseph) Cleary; her step sister-in-law, Dolores Gronewald; her lifelong friend, Linda Murphy, and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gregory; her parents, Reuben and Dora Thiede; her in-laws, William and Gladys Gorgen; her stepmother-in-law, Lucille Gorgen; and her step brother-in-law, Don Gronewald.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH in Mineral Point, with Rev. Cal Schaver officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 11:50 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to The Greg and Joni Gorgen Fund, of the Mineral Point Community Endowment Fund or Faith Lutheran Church.
