Thankful for volunteering opportunity

By Brooke Bechen-bbechen@thedodgevillechronicle.com

Each year around Thanksgiving, I reflect on everything I am thankful for. I am thankful for my health, my family and my friends. I am also thankful for my job - one that allows me to share my passion for community and journalism - a job that has also provided me the opportunity to interact and form relationships with many people in all of Iowa County's communities. This year I am also thankful for an opportunity to volunteer for a great organization that I have covered and promoted for the Chronicle in the past.
Earlier this year, I was asked to join the United Fund of Iowa County Board of Directors. The organization supports community health and human services needs, and also raises and distributes financial resources to organizations and people in Iowa County. All the money raised stays local!
We are currently working on our donation campaign, and have been asking individuals and businesses to contribute. By giving a monetary donation, you are allowing a worthy organization or cause to be the beneficiary of funding in 2018. Organizations that have received funding in the past include Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts, Hodan Community Services, Iowa-Grant Reading is Fundamental program, SWCAP and Folklore Village, just to name a few.
Big or small, your donation counts! Especially to an organization that has applied to receive funds from United Fund of Iowa County.
We are an all volunteer board, meaning none of us are paid for the time we spend with the organization. We all have our reasons for wanting to volunteer, and for me, it's all about giving something back to my community. I spend a lot of time wrapped up in my own things - why not set a little time aside to do something for someone else?
I encourage readers to find their own organizations or causes to volunteer for - to find the reason you want to volunteer - especially this time of year. You may find there are more volunteering opportunities than you think in your community or neighboring communities.
