This is the second go-around with this issue and we feel it is necessary as
it affects us all.
Part of the Governor's Budget includes something that threatens your right
to know unless you are a frequent visitor to your local government's website.
If passed, that is where legal notices will be printed. Of course the bill gives
local units of governments the right to still publish notices if they want to
but how many will do that?
This is not about revenue to newspapers. It is about transparency in government.
When notices and minutes are printed in the newspaper you can
get the information immediately without having to search.
Wisconsin law says it's your right to know - but that right may be going
away if Assembly Bill 70, Senate Bill 42 and the Governor's Budget as currently
written are approved by the Wisconsin Legislature.,
Affected by the passage of the bills are school boards, city councils, village
boards and county boards who will no longer be required to print a summary
of their actions in the local newspaper and on the statewide public notice
website,www.WisconsinPublicNotices.org.
We have taken our stand and notified our area lawmakers why we feel this
is a bad idea.

and senator and let them know you want to continue to be informed
about legal notices in print.
