Attend meetings, be proactive

By Brooke Bechen-bbechen@thedodgevillechronicle.com

As I scrolled through Facebook this morning, reviewing the day's events
before hopping off to work, a news article caught my eye, an article by
NBC15 about a public meeting in which a possible referendum for the Madison
Metropolitan School District was discussed.
"Only four people took advantage of the meeting, but many of the concerns
came from the board, including how much money they should ask for," read
the description above the posted article on Facebook.
I hate to admit it, but the "only four people" didn't really surprise me. I've
been covering school board meetings and other town government meetings
for years - and sometimes maybe one person from the public shows up. It is
truly unfortunate, especially when important decisions are made at those
meetings.
What is even more unfortunate is the backlash you hear after the meeting
has concluded, including the gossip on the street and the complaining online.
Doing these things does little to address any real problem, although it may
make you feel a little better.
I encourage tax payers around the county to come to a public meeting every
once in awhile. Meeting agendas are posted in numerous places around the
county (they have to do so legally), are printed in our newspaper and are
available online with a simple search of the municipality or organization.
And most every public meeting has a public comment section - there are no
excuses when it comes to being an active citizen and letting your concerns
be heard!
I commend the people that have taken time out of their busy lives to attend
meetings and provide the needed feedback to school boards, town boards,
etc. Often these boards ask you, the tax payer, for support - maybe it is time
you offer some support to these working bodies in return.
It is pretty depressing that only four people showed up in Madison to discuss
a possible referendum, something that would affect tax payers in Madison
for years. Let's set an example, Iowa County - let's show others that we
care about our communities by attending meetings, providing feedback and
being proactive.
