Bullying comes at all levels
By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com
Usually the discussion centers around children who have behavioral issues
and act out against other children who cannot defend themselves. But occasionally
bullying enters the adult world, too.
It sure did last week when Washington Post reporter Jose A. DelReal was
denied access to a campaign event for Trump VP choice Mike Pence which
was held in Waukesha. DelReal is a victim of a crusade against the Post by
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
DelReal was not only denied entrance as a reporter but, after he put his
camera, phone and laptop in his car he was denied access as a private citizen
when he returned.
Trump has made it known that he is denying press credentials for any Post
staff member. That is a sad situation.
Trump should realize that the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech
and freedom of the press. By denying the Post access the action takes on the
appearance of bullying.
And for a presidential candidate, that is sad to say the least.
As Post executive editor Martin Baron said in response....
"The harassment of an independent press is not coming to an end. It is getting
worse."
