Background checks on ammo

By Kayla Barnes-kbarnes@thedodgevillechronicle.com

With all this talk of stricter background checks for those purchasing guns, California is taking it one step further in doing background checks on those purchasing ammunition and ban the possession of ammunition magazines with over 10 rounds. California already has a ban on magazines over 10 rounds so this proposal would give California the strictest ammunition restrictions in the U.S.
New York had already required background checks but Gov. Andrew Cuomo suspended the checks in July stating they had an inadequate state database. Amy Hunter, a spokeswoman for the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, said the effort to restrict ammo sales represents another step in the march to eradicate the rights of law-abiding gun owners.
Democrats have intensified their plea on firearms restrictions in reaction to the recent campus shootings (unfortunately I have to make shootings plural). Some have stated that restricting ammunition and checks wouldn't impair the rights of law abiding citizens but help protect them and save lives. Eight states have limits on high-capacity magazines. Wisconsin is not one of those states. Wisconsin has a law stating that a person purchasing a handgun needs to wait 48 hours before they can obtain the actual weapon. Republicans currently had that changed.
31 people are killed every day but guns. Death by guns is the second leading cause for young people ages 19-31. It's sad that these statistics exist. I'm not sure how much background checks on ammunition would help. It doesn't hurt to try it out and see if it will help with the issues the nation is facing now with the constant shootings. My true feelings are we need to work on mental health and help those who have mental health issues and keep them away from guns so they can't harm themselves and others.
