Help stop the spiral

By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

Once again the need to talk about heroin addiction is here.
One thing we have all learned about heroin addiction is that it usually starts with marijuana then moves to prescription drug as addicts chase the illusive high. When the cost for pills gets too great the addict moves to heroin.
In other words, the household medicine cabinet can be a dangerous place when it comes to the availability of medications which can be abused.
Once that abuse starts and the move to heroin takes place the downward spiral begins.
If you have unused prescription drugs in your medicine cabinet and you want to dispose of them safely then it would be wise to take part in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 26.
That day, or any day in Iowa County, you can drop off unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs to help prevent drug diversion or misuse. The Iowa County Sheriff's Department has a drop off site that you can access by entering the door closest to the flag pole.
How about taking it o ne step further? After you dispose of your unwanted drugs tell others about the dangers of unused medicine and how it can contribute to addiction. Urge them to get rid of their unused meds too.
