Dodgers top Arrows, share SWC title with RV, RC

On paper the final regular season game pitting a 6-3 team against an 0-9 team should give an overwhelming nod to the better record.
That was what stared Dodgeville's boys basketball team in the face when conference winless Lancaster came to town Friday night - oh and there was also the possibility of a share in the SWC championship for the Dodgers.
Lancaster proved to be every bit of a tough foe as the Arrows led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter and 33-29 at the half. They built their lead to 42-31 before the Dodgers suddenly woke up.
"It happened when there was a double foul called (of all things) with Nate (Hottmann) being one of them," said Dodger coach Ryan Bohnsack. "It woke him up. I think he said 'enough is enough'".
The Dodger junior went on to score 10 of his 15 points from then on in the second half as the Dodgers outscored Lancaster 21-20 in the third frame to trail by only three at 53-50. He then made the lay-in that gave the Dodgers their first lead of the game at the 7:17 mark on an unselfish feed from senior Nick Crowley.
After an Arrow bucket quickly put them back ahead, a pair of free throws by Crowley and two more by Hottmann to go with a 12' jumper by sophomore Austin Larson and the Dodgers led by four and never looked back.
The final was 76-62 - and a River Valley win over Richland Center put the Dodgers with both those two teams atop the SWC with identical 7-3 records - a tri-championship.
Crowley emerged the high-point getter in the contest with 32. He scored 23 of those in the second half and went 12x12 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Besides Hottmann's 15, Larson added 14.
Lancaster sophomore Nathan Tranel hit 17 to lead his team, but he was held to just four points in the third quarter and none in the fourth.
Senior Kyle Jerrett added 12.
"We started out struggling as a team taking care of the ball," Bohnsack said. "Hottmann jump started us and we were able ot put pressure on them in the fourth quarter and make the plays on both ends."
The Dodgers held a 26-9 advantage in that final frame.
"This was a huge conference win for us," Bohnsack added. "Lancas-ter played really well - better than us - for three quarters. They have battled several teams right down to the wire this year."
"It was only fitting for the conference to finish with tri-champions," said the coach. "There was no team that really dominated this season."
An exuberant Bohnsack paid tribute to his assistant coaches saying, "A big key to our success is our assistant coaches. They make sure we're on top of things so no detail is missed during practice and during the games. They keep me abreast of foul situations, when to make substitutes and every little detail - they were the key to us winning this game."
"This was a huge team victory for us," he also said. "Some of the guys maybe don't get the minutes on the court, but they battle the starters in practice every day and make them better."
