Lee's late scoring sends Eagles over Wildcats

Barneveld senior Sawyer Lee led a swing that broke a 58 all tie and sent the Golden Eagles to the championship game of their Candy Cane Classic Tuesday.
Lee had 26 points, none bigger than the seven he scored that broke the tie and powered Barneveld to a 72-68 win over Belleville in the tournament's opening round. When Lee was done scoring, the Eagles led 70-64.
Belleville then cut the lead to 71-68 but missed a late three that would have tied the game.
The Eagles shot 74 percent the second half and needed every point to stave off the challenging Wildcats.
"They are a scrappy team and kept coming back," said coach Shawn Sullivan. "They are a good team and I am glad we drew them first."
Sullivan was pleased with the way the Eagles got their points the second half.
"We moved well without the ball," he said. "We got some back cuts to the basket for some easy lay-ups."
The Eagles had four players reach double figures. Besides Lee's 26, Colton Moyer scored 16, Jeremy Whitish 15 and Sam Nechkash 11.
One of the big swings that served to turn the game in Barneveld's favor came in the third quarter when the Wildcats received a pair of technical fouls. The Eagles made three of five free throws and added a basket for a five point swing.
Sullivan said a key to success this season will be what the Eagles get from the seniors.
"Without them we are pretty young out there," he said. "They know they have to play better under pressure."
The Eagles got better results on the boards the second half when they limited the Wildcats to five offensive rebounds.
"We gave up 10 off the offensive glass in the first half," Sullivan said.
"This is a game we can learn from," he said.
