Four DHS students perform "Hairspray" April 26-28
VACT presents their ninth all teen production this April with the high-energy musical Hairspray. Performances run April 26th - 28th at the VAHS PAC with performances at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday the 26th, Friday the 27th, and Saturday the 28th and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday the 28th. The Verona Area High School Performing Arts Center is located at 300 Richard St.
Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a plus-size forward-thinking teenager living in Baltimore in 1962. When her dream of dancing on the popular after-school tv program "The Corny Collins Show" becomes reality, she realizes there is a lot more to life than fame. Through her strength and convictions, Tracy is able to integrate a television program, win the adoration of teen heartthrob Link Larkin, and teach everyone that it doesn't matter what a person looks like and that everyone has the right to dance!
The musical features a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and music by Marc Shaiman. The original stage production opened on Broadway in 2002 and was directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. Audiences will have fun from beginning to end with highlights including "Welcome To The Sixties," "It's Hairspray," and the show-stopping final number "You Can't Stop The Beat."
VACT's production features a cast of 99 high-school aged teenagers across 17 schools. Grace Dahlen (Edgewood High School) and Leah Johnson (Dodgeville High School) share the role of Tracy Turnblad with Derek Argall (Verona Area High School) and Brett Fredrickson (Mt. Horeb High School) sharing the role of Link Larkin. Elizabeth Engle (Middleton High School) and Leila Collins (Madison West High School) share the role of Penny Pingleton, while Jacob Connor (Verona Area High School) and Jamal Stone (Sun Prairie High School) play the role of Seaweed J. Stubbs.
This production is directed and co-choreographed by Alyssa Dvorak who has previously directed West Side Story and Bring It On with the VACT Teen group. Lynn Vilker served as Producer and Head Costume Designer of the production with Kelsey Odorizzi as Music Director, Marsha Heuer as Co-Choreographer, and Jonathan Woolums as Stage Manager.
