Veterans stories start next
week in The Dodgeville Chronicle
by Christiana Hofer
Over the course of the last couple months, The Dodgeville Chronicle has been working on a project dedicated to veterans.
Staff began interviewing service members about their time in the service to be published for a veterans supplement in November.
The response to the project has been so big that The Chronicle has decided to publish it as a series, thus keeping it open for any veterans who see the articles and decide they might like to participate also. The first veteran story in the series will appear in next week's Thursday, November 16 edition.
On behalf of the staff at The Chronicle, it has been an incredible opportunity to speak with these veterans and learn their stories. We would also like to extend our immense gratitude to those who have served, those who didn't make it home and their families.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Christiana Hofer lives in Highland and is a second year student at UW-Platteville. In need of an internship and having a love of writing, she approached The Dodgeville Chronicle about availability. Through collaboration, the idea of a series on Those Who Have Served became a good fit.
Christiana comes from a military family and she has seen her father be deployed. She knows the effect serving has on both the soldier and the soldier's family. She has interviewed some of those who served with him.
Veterans have been volunteering to be interviewed either in person or through family members. Christiana has interviewed veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are 30 interviews ready to go and she is working on others as they come in.
Originally, the plan was to produce a supplement for Veterans Day, telling the stories of those who have served. But the calls kept coming and we did not want to leave anyone out with a story to tell.
Thus, the decision to publish stories bi-weekly until the project is finished and all voices are heard was made.
The series will start next week. We are securing sponsors for the series and if anyone wants to be included let us know.
And veterans, if you have not contacted us yet and want to tell your story, please give us a call (608-935-2331) or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
All veterans and all stories are important to all of us.
