Dodgeville School District name change to be considered...again
|The idea of changing the name of the Dodgeville School District is not a new idea; it has come up year after year, and is now being considered by the Dodgeville School Board once again.|
District administrator Jeff Jacobson told the board at their meeting Monday night that discussion about the name change had ceased during the referendum, but he has now been approached again about the change to "bring the Ridgeway community, in name, into the district."
"I would say for some, it's an emotional issue," Jacobson said. "But for some, not so much."
Board president Mike Humke was quick to state that he believes it should be more than just the decision of seven board members, and board member Carrie Schroeder agreed.
"I don't think we should have the authority to make the decision alone," she said. "The community needs to be part of it."
Board vice president Carrie Klenko added that she feels that including Ridgeway in the name is "the right thing to do."
Board member Dennis Polglaze, however, cautioned against the ramifications of bringing this discussion back up.
"I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill," he said....

A suggestion that I'll attribute to the late Steve Hilgenberg is that the district should have been named the "Upland School District" back when the Dodgeville/Ridgeway merger first occurred. This approach was taken with the River Valley, Wisconsin Heights, Iowa Grant, and Pecatonica districts (I presume) to acknowledge that these are multi-community districts.
As a DHS grad and life-long Ridgeway resident, I've come to terms with the likely reality that the long term prospects for Ridgeway elementary in the current facility are a foregone conclusion.
While I hold some hope that we'll see a right-sized elementary facility at some point, and would contribute generously to see that happen, anything that can be done to better acknowledge Ridgeway's contribution to the district and reduce the feeling of "us vs. them" between our communities would be welcome.
